In March 1992, as a young 22-year-old, I embarked on a journey to Hong Kong—a vibrant city that was, at the time, still a jewel of the British Empire. The Hong Kong of 1992 was a place like no other, a bustling metropolis where East met West in a unique blend of cultures, commerce, and charisma.
The city was a spectacle of contrasts. Businesspeople in sharp pinstriped suits and bowler hats navigated the streets with an air of purpose, often accompanied by the era’s iconic, oversized mobile phones. Rolls-Royces were a common sight; occasionally, you’d spot a gold-plated one gliding through the streets. The Peninsula Hotel, an emblem of luxury, boasted a fleet of distinctive dollar-green Rolls-Royces, ready to whisk their VIP guests to any corner of the city.
The atmosphere was almost intoxicating—wealth seemed to linger in the air, palpable and pervasive. It was a city that thrived on commerce and ambition, a true capital of capitalism in Southeast Asia. I loved exploring its diverse offerings, from tranquil temples to bustling malls. The ferry ride to Hong Kong Island was always a highlight, placing me in the heart of the city’s vibrant energy.

A trip to Victoria Peak offered a panoramic view that was nothing short of breathtaking. Hong Kong left an indelible mark on me in just four days, a lasting impression of a city alive with opportunity and cultural fusion.
Regrettably, I haven’t returned since that visit. The handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997 marked a significant shift, and the changes in governance have been difficult to reconcile with the Hong Kong I once knew. Political tensions in September 2019 further deterred me from revisiting.
Today, Hong Kong feels both familiar and distant. The city I remember, with its distinct flair and vibrant spirit, has transformed. While it remains geographically close, the political landscape has created an insurmountable chasm. The allure of the past keeps my memories vivid, yet the present reality leaves me hesitant.
For now, Hong Kong remains a cherished memory of my youth, a place that once felt like the center of the world. Perhaps someday, I’ll find a reason to return.
