Today, we set out early — the perfect time to explore a little treasure tucked away in the heart of Thuringia: Mühlhausen. Neither of us had heard much about this town before, which made it all the more exciting to discover a place that’s still a bit under the radar.
Mühlhausen is one of those charming, lesser-known towns in Germany that feels like stepping back in time. It has an authentic medieval vibe, with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for wandering around without the crowds. The town isn’t just pretty — it’s packed with history, dating back to the Middle Ages, and it played a pretty important role during the Reformation.
We were impressed — in just three hours of exploring, we already took around 300 photos! The town’s beauty and charm are truly incredible, and every corner seemed to offer a new picture-perfect scene. For Andi, it was a trip down memory lane — he had been to Mühlhausen before, but he was only 5 or 6 years old and couldn’t remember a thing. Now, seeing it again as an adult, he agrees — Mühlhausen ranks as one of the most interesting towns in Thuringia.
A Town Full of History and Charm
One of the first sights we explored was the impressive town wall, remarkably well-preserved, which gave us a real sense of the town’s medieval past. Walking along it, we could almost hear echoes of history. Just next to the wall is the Hauptmarkt, the main square, lined with colorful houses and cozy cafes. It’s a perfect place to sit down with a coffee and watch the world go by.
We also visited the Church of St. Mary, a stunning Gothic structure with a tower that offers fantastic views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Inside, it’s just as impressive with its beautiful stained glass windows and historic interior. For architecture and history buffs, it’s a real hidden gem.
Did you know that Mühlhausen was a significant center of the Reformation? Martin Luther himself visited here, and the town has some fascinating historical sites related to that era. There’s even a small museum dedicated to its religious history — a must-see for anyone interested in Germany’s complex past.
A Foodie’s Delight & Local Specialties
After soaking in the history, we took a stroll down some of the less touristy streets, discovering cozy shops and bakeries along the way. And if you’re a fan of local food, don’t miss trying some Thüringer Bratwurst or a slice of authentic German cake — the kind that makes you want to sit down and stay a while.
Andi couldn’t resist commenting on the quality of the Thüringer Bratwurst he got here — but, of course, on a high level. Everyone would be happy with the one he had, but his loyalty is firmly fixed with the Thüringer Bratwurst of his hometown. Still, he was pretty pleased with the local version, even if he kept insisting it could be better!
A Peaceful Town That Leaves a Lasting Impression
All in all, Mühlhausen was a wonderful surprise — a peaceful, historically rich town that feels untouched by the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. If you’re looking for a quiet escape off the beaten path, this is definitely worth a visit. It’s the kind of place that makes you appreciate the slow pace of life and the enduring beauty of history still alive in its streets.
