Marco Polo Hotel Davao: Our Oasis and Our Memories

There are places we visit that leave a brief, fleeting impression, but then there are extraordinary spots that linger in our hearts long after we’ve departed. For me, one such place is the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City. This hotel is not merely a landmark; it exudes a distinctive calmness and charm that draws you in, making it feel like a home away from home.

Over the years, whether we were walking or journeying through Davao’s vibrant streets, the Marco Polo has consistently felt like an enchanting realm—a serene oasis amid the city’s bustling energy. Upon stepping inside, the ambience reveals its magnetic allure: the lobby, grand yet inviting, offers an elegant sanctuary where one can unwind and rejuvenate. The soothing décor and the gentle hum of activity create an atmosphere that is both refined and warm.

The First Encounter: “One Day… I Wish We Could Stay”

My first experience at the hotel unfolded during a memorable trip to Davao to meet Lizz. The glimmering facade of the Marco Polo constantly caught my eye, inspiring daydreams of staying there. I couldn’t help but think, “If only we could check in and enjoy its comforts.” Yet, my financial constraints weighed heavy, and that dream seemed just out of reach. Even from outside, the hotel cast a spell with its striking architecture and welcoming aura, leaving a vivid impression on my memory.

A Memorable Wedding Weekend: One Night Became Three

Then, in a twist of fate, everything changed during Lizz’s sister’s wedding. Two years after my initial visit, we returned to the hotel with plans to reserve two rooms—one for wedding festivities and another for us to crash for just one night. As we discussed our options, we thought, “Okay, just one night should suffice.” But the allure of the Marco Polo was irresistible, and we found ourselves extending our stay to a delightful three-night escape. From that first night, we felt a deep connection with the place, thinking, “This is our spot.”

A Special Home Base: Ten Nights with My Mother

Our journey didn’t stop there. Later, when my mother joined us, we embraced the Marco Polo as our home base for an extraordinary ten nights. No other hotels we considered could compare to its cleanliness, comfort, and peaceful atmosphere.

During our stay, my mother could luxuriate in the plush lobby sofa, basking in the calmness it offered. With her straightforward demeanor, she declared, “I’m not leaving this place again.” The joy of witnessing her renewed sense of peace, coupled with the radiant smile on her face, made every moment we spent there priceless.

Why the Marco Polo Meant So Much More

For us, the Marco Polo became more than just a hotel; it evolved into an essential rhythm in our travel experiences. It offered us:

  • A trusted comfort that we could rely on, fostering a sense of stability in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • A calming atmosphere where constant adjustments felt unnecessary—every detail was catered to perfectly.
  • A lobby that served as a welcoming pause amid the city’s flurry, a safe haven to relax and reflect.

In Davao, the Marco Polo holds a distinguished reputation as a favored destination among local celebrities and influential figures—a sophisticated space where professionalism intertwines seamlessly with hospitality.

Clean Comfort and Serenity: Essential for My Mother

What stands out to me most about the Marco Polo is its unparalleled level of cleanliness and comfort, which holds great significance for my mother. In the past, we had encountered various accommodations that simply could not meet her high standards of cleanliness, and the incessant noise from air conditioning units made it exceedingly difficult for her to relax.

At the Marco Polo, everything was on a different level entirely. Immaculately clean restrooms, well-maintained common areas, and a palpable sense of care permeated the hotel, making it an oasis tailored to meet the needs of even the most particular travelers. This was not merely “good enough”—it was perfection, nurturing tranquility and comfort for those who prioritize such experiences.

The Pandemic and the Empty Space

When the pandemic struck, the hotel was forced to close its doors, leaving an undeniable void in the vibrant center of Davao. The city, once filled with the lively bustle of visitors and locals alike, seemed to dim without the welcoming presence of the Marco Polo. I am aware that the city has been striving to revive the area, and I sincerely hope it thrives again in the face of adversity. Yet, for me, the heart of Davao will only feel complete once the Marco Polo reopens to embrace guests anew.

Because it was never simply a hotel.

It was our cherished sanctuary in the heart of Davao—a delightful refuge where we could unwind, enjoy coffee in style, reconnect with friends, and, most importantly, feel at ease with my mother by my side.

A Message of Hope

I am not merely sharing this from a place of nostalgia; I write this message imbued with hope.

The Marco Polo Hotel in Davao embodies beautiful memories forged with my mother. It represents the cleanliness we could count on, the comfort that felt genuine, and the gentle embrace that offered respite amidst the city’s relentless hustle and bustle.

Yes, I miss it dearly.

But I hold fast to the belief that one day, the Marco Polo will rise again, resuming its vital role as an oasis of elegance and calmness. When that moment arrives, I hope it rekindles the magic we so cherished: that serene, oasis-like feeling, the establishment’s refined grace, and the professional warmth that greeted us time and time again.
