Thoughts About the Quote
James A. Michener’s quote is a good reminder of what travel should really be about. Of course, nobody has to love every dish, understand every tradition, or agree with every belief they encounter on the road. We all have our limits, habits, and comfort zones. But if we travel to another country and then reject almost everything that makes this place different — the food, the customs, the religion, and even the people — then maybe we are not really travelling. Maybe we are only looking for a warmer, cheaper, or more exotic version of home.
For us, travel becomes meaningful when we stay curious. Sometimes that means trying food we cannot pronounce, smiling through a custom we don’t fully understand, or accepting that people live, pray, dress, eat, and think differently than we do. We do not have to become someone else, but we should at least arrive with respect. Otherwise, the journey may take us across the world, while our mind never really leaves home.
