Person relaxing outdoors with quote of the day

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” — Mae West

Thoughts About the Quote of The Day

Mae West really knew how to say something deep while still sounding like she was leaning back with perfect lipstick and a glass of something sparkling.

“You only live once” is one of those phrases people love to throw around before doing something questionable—like booking a flight with a 5-hour layover at 3 a.m., ordering the extra dessert, or buying that random object you absolutely don’t need but somehow already emotionally adopted.

But the second part of the quote is the real magic: “but if you do it right, once is enough.”

That doesn’t mean we have to live perfectly. Honestly, who does? Most of us are just trying to remember where we put our keys, drink enough water, and not say something stupid before coffee. Doing life “right” doesn’t mean having everything figured out. It means collecting moments, laughing often, loving deeply, making a few brave choices, and hopefully having stories that are worth retelling later.

Maybe living once is enough when we don’t spend the whole time waiting for “someday.” Someday to travel. Someday to change something. Someday to say what we feel. Someday to wear the nice shirt. Someday to eat the cake.

Mae West would probably say: eat the cake now.

So maybe the little reminder for today is this: don’t just exist on autopilot. Make room for joy, silliness, courage, and a bit of harmless drama. Life doesn’t need to be perfect to be full. It just needs to be lived with a little heart—and maybe a little sparkle.
